The Thing God is Asking Me To Do Scares Me

by Tiffany Henning, Founder of Somethings Gotta Change

Truth time: What God is leading me to do right now scares me.

I’ve shared about No Pastor Alone, the Pastor Wellness Movement’s three-year initiative beginning in 2027, and how I believe God is calling me to help change the way we care for pastors and ministry leaders. We want people serving in ministry to have a clearer path to the support they need—and someone alongside them as they take it.

But if I’m being completely honest, I feel unequipped, unqualified, and unworthy. Majorly.

I’ve been going through Experiencing God by Henry and Richard Blackaby, and even though this isn’t my first time through the study, it is hitting me right between the eyes this time.

Last week I was reading a section that talked about how, when God calls you, it will be a God-sized encounter with Him that comes with a God-sized assignment. It went on to say that the assignments God gave throughout the Bible were always God-sized—beyond what people could accomplish in their own strength—because He wanted to demonstrate His nature, His strength, His provision, and His love to His people and to the watching world.

  • Abraham & Sarah had their promised child later in life, long past the age when they should have been able to conceive.

  • Joshua watched the “impenetrable” walls of Jericho fall at the shout of God’s people.

  • Gideon defeated an army of 135,000 with only 300 men, trumpets, and broken pots.

  • Jesus fed more than 5,000 people with just 5 loaves of bread and 3 fish.

And I have seen these kinds of movements and miracles in my own life, too.

  • My youngest being healed in the womb when the diagnosis was dire.

  • Finances somehow working out when we needed 2+2 to equal 7.

  • People coming into my life at exactly the right time and in exactly the right place to meet a need.

And now, I find myself at that crossroads once again.

Sunday, I listened to a sermon from my church. My pastor was sharing about his recent trip to Kenya, where people invited him to plant a fruit tree with them. They told him, “Many years from now, we are going to eat fruit from this tree together.”

He talked about how God invites us to partner with Him in that same way, and I felt like God was reminding me of something I needed to hear:

He isn’t asking me to grow the tree. He is simply asking me to plant the seed.

To lay down my fears.
To lay down my insecurities.
To trust Him with what I cannot do.
And to let Him do the heavy lifting.

Maybe that’s what faith looks like sometimes: being willing to plant a seed that God will bring the growth to, trusting that one day you and I might sit together and share a meal of the fruit from the seed we chose to sow today.

That’s my hope for No Pastor Alone—that the groundwork we lay now will help pastors find support before they reach a breaking point, where ministry leaders feel safe asking for help and churches care more fully for the people who care for them.

And along the way, I believe God wants to do something transformative not only through me, but in me. I’m learning to lay down my fears and insecurities, to ask for help and trust Him with what I cannot do.
